Brighton Galleries

Recently I took the opportunity to visit Brighton with a friend and managed to look round a few of the quirky galleries that line the streets. Even outside the galleries, Brighton is full of art and culture so I found it an all round inspiring trip. It definitely got me motivated to create more work.
As I am focusing on mainly screen printing in my project, I zoned in on many of the lino prints/woodcuts that I were around.
The three main galleries we visited were Prescription art which had a very contemporary feel to it: https://www.prescriptionart.com
 Naked Lunch

Pastel - Lethalic

These were two of the prints that really stood out to me in this gallery. I love the bold contrasts of Naked Lunch and the line work. This made me think carefully on the process of my screen prints and how I could compose the composition to get the best results, using my lines more carefully.
The second image I was instantly drawn too and was my favourite out of the whole day! It's a layered screen print with hand applied gold leaf finishing. This made me consider adding metallic colour to my prints after, to highlight details. I think this would work well with my water theme as it could help feature the water even further, making the light/shadows more intense and accomplish the classic shimmering water effect. I also think the metallic works nicely on the dark background as it contrasts more and stands out. I would like to experiment with screen printing on different coloured backgrounds to see what effect it gives and if it emotes a different reaction.

Another great gallery we visited was Studio 45 http://studio45bn1.com which had a more relaxed feel with a greater mix of work in it. I particularly liked the 'Ninja Turtles' print they had.

I think the humour and the detail in this print is great. It reminds me how precise you can be with your lines in print work and that I would like to achieve a more detailed look in my work to draw the audience in.

The third gallery we visited was I O Gallery http://www.iogallery.co.uk which had more of a commercial feel to it, but I still found print work that I loved within the shop. The prints were of more traditional subjects such as British wildlife and animals, similar to the artist Mark Hearld who's work I have admired for years.
