Today in my lecture, we talked a lot about our thinking process and why we think like that. Am I aware I think like that? What would happen if I thought in a different way?
We looked at different ways of thinking, we discussed them together but I went online after to get dictionary definitions:
Deductive logic: 'Deductive reasoning, also deductive logic, logical deduction is the process of reasoning from one or more statements (premises) to reach a logically certain conclusion.'
Inductive logic: 'An inductive logic is a system of evidential support that extends deductive logic to less-than-certain inferences. For valid deductive arguments the premises logically entail the conclusion, where the entailment means that the truth of the premises provides a guarantee of the truth of the conclusion.'
Abductive: Abductive reasoning (also called abduction, abductive inference, or retroduction) is a form of logical inference which starts with an observation then seeks to find the simplest and most likely explanation. In abductive reasoning, unlike in deductive reasoning, the premises do not guarantee the conclusion.
What frame of mind are you in when you work? I know I am usually using abductive logic, like a lot of creative people do, because sometimes we don't know what the outcome will be.
We also thought about declarative knowledge - saying just whats in front of you, using previous knowledge and experiences to know exactly what you can see.
procedural knowledge - making an informed decision on what you can see.
Tacit knowledge - sometimes known as quiet knowledge, the stuff thats hard to explain because you know it when you feel/see it but articulating why/what/how is difficult.
I have noticed in my BA degree I started to get stuck in the same style, repeating the same kind of work, using the same materials each time to create a similar outcome and not a variety of work or ideas. Although this style was successful and it worked for me, I want to challenge myself in my MA to try something new and find my own take on a different way of working. I have acknowledged how I think now after this lecture, and want to try and think differently to see what the outcome is. I hope this will give me more confidence, which will come the more I continue my practice this way.
Things you see people do that look effortless are effortless for a reason - they are well practiced.
